Return to Oz was a film I saw when it was first released in the mid 80s.

Return to Oz was a film I saw when it was first released in the mid 80s. It's based on the 2nd and 3rd Oz books (yes, there was more than one) The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. It also echoes the MGM film in that people that appear in Kansas reappear in Oz as other characters in Oz. But there are no songs in this film, which is unusual for a Disney film (though not so much for a live action one).

Lots of details get changed. Mombi the Witch gets merged with Langwidere (who has a collection of heads she likes to wear) and the Nome King is much more an elemental force in this film. But some sections - like trying to pick the right ornament in a room of ornaments - is taken straight from the books. The SFX looks a bit dated nowadays, being mostly stop animation, claymation, and variations of back and front screen projection. I don't think the film was successful, as there was never a sequel. This was Fairuza Balk's first film and she played Dorothy. She's appeared in 29 films since then, with mixed results. Also, Ozma's back story was dropped (she started out as a boy called "Tip") and the Kansas shown in the film looks rather odd, perhaps because it was short in Britain?

But there is one thing in this film that makes me love it - Tik Tok - which is just like the books.

Had a read, and it's another fan piece about reviving the show. Much as I would have liked to have seen more of this show, almost everybody in it or important to it, has moved on. Why would Josh Whedon come back to this while he has a hit show with "Agents of Shield"? How would you explain the fact that all the actors in it are at least 10 years later?

No, that boat has sailed. More likely would be a reboot with an all new cast. But would it have the chemistry of the original? Almost as unlikely.

I'm watching BICENTENNIAL  MAN, on TV just now. It's one of the films that I'll stop and watch, even though I have it on TV. I like the story, which is really about just makes someone "human".  I also think it's one of Robin Williams's better roles. I also like that even though it's a very loose adaptation of an Asimov short story, it follows the spirit of that story very well (far more so than I, Robot).

Well, this season's finale was MUCH BETTER than expected.

Well, this season's finale was MUCH BETTER than expected. I think though that the ABC have lost something in their handling of the show.  There was a scene towards the end where the Doctor stares vague towards the lower left of the screen, deep in thought. Then, up pops a box in that corner saying "NEXT: INSPECTOR GEORGE GENTLY".

Like most fans I wish the series had been longer, but at least the film, as compact as it was, resolved some of the issues and story arcs of the series, and gave closure on the characters. That said, would I like to see ANOTHER film with these characters? I think perhaps not, because whatever the plot was, it'd be sup[superfluous this this one, just like (IMHO) all the Alien films after the 2nd one missed the point.

Dewdney in a 1984 Scientific American article, and still going strong with a semi-regular tournaments, has a bit of a backstory.  Here we have Creeper & Reaper, a pair of autonomous replicants from 1971, which inspired Dewdney to his invention, and nearby we find Darwin from 1961 which has many similarities to Corewar.  The two games are compared in this note from 1998:

I watched this last night on SBS. An incredibly long obsessive rant about thing in the film THE SHINING which Kubrick "never even knew" he'd put in the film? Is the carpet pattern linked with the rumour that Kubrick  directed a fake version of the moon landing footage? I know this as a "Rubik's Snake" or a "Rubik's Twist" and have one that's 25 year's old. ALDI might have some like that as well.

Well, that was an odd outing.. I'd misread the email message and rather than  having arrived, that BONUS book was cancelled. Still, I got several articles I downloaded printed, and discovered at the library not only the last five volumes of FABLES (which I can now read after the 11th), but a curious graphic novel THE MOTHERLESS OVEN.   I've read most of it traveling on the bus - quite bizarre but an an intriguing book.

The Doctor's current companion, CLARA, is leaving soon (which was announced ages ago), in what's been described  as a "shocking fashion". Here's my take on this, based on NO EVIDENCE at all
(so NOT A SPOILER THEN).

1) What if THIS Clara is captured and converted by the Daleks, only to be dumped in their Asylum? That would mean that we've already seen the end of Clara, and she won't come back because she was blown up with the Asylum planet!!! That would be extremely viscous way to exit her!

2) What if Clara is actually a "chameleon arch" of an EARLIER version of Missy? It would explain a few things, especially Missy's comments  about "choosing her". The shocking ending might be that she finds her token (might be an old watch), becomes Time Lord again and regenerates into Missy! Wouldn't THAT be a stunning (and permanent) way of writing her out! And the motivation? Missy wanted to "run" with her friend, but knew he'd never do that willingly. Being Clara was a way to do that.By being "Chameleon Arched" she forgets that she's Missy for the duration, but recalls all that when she finally reverts to Time Lord. And, because she's done all that before, she then goes back in time and sets up Clara meeting the Doctor!

I'm guessing that when she does goe, it'll be a lot more mundane  than either of the possibilities I've suggested, but sometimes the fun's in speculating.

This morning it felt like my brain was coming out of head via my eyes, a strange effect of having a migraine/sinus headache. But I still had to sit down and write in front of the computer. That cleared up (mostly) after lying in a darkened room watching a FLASH episode with the "Pied Piper" (a silly villain in the silver age comics, a vicious bastard in the TV show).

Tomoorow it's out and about which is probably a good thing.  Time to feed the pets and sit outside in the shade.

I was looking for examples of propaganda comics, and found THIS!

I was looking for examples of propaganda comics, and found THIS! According to various sources (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_propaganda_comics#Grenada:_Rescued_from_Rape_and_Slavery), this was a CIA produced comic distributed in Grenada just before the US forces occupied that country.  This was at the tale end of the Cold War, but the comic seems fairly crude in what it's saying, more like an old Iron man comic than anything else.

The thing is, I "know" this artist - he did work for DELL and GOLD KEY in the 60s, I know his style. but his work was seldom signed. I'm not 100% sure but I think it's Jack Sparling, as based on examples I found at http://beachbumcomics.blogspot.com.au/2014/05/jazzy-jack-sparling-marvelous-comic.html. I guess work is work.
