Have just finished reading this. I enjoyed everything in this book. There's a flow to Gaiman's writing, even when h'e's imitating Doyle and *Raffert*y. And I'm glad I finally read MONARCH OF THE GLEN (which was also included at the end of AMERICAN GODS). It makes me wonder what ele is in the book of the same name? Another short story collection, or a very expanded story, starting back in Chicago?

Might be an idea to find/borrow a copy to read and find out.

I think folk who promote a full immersion VR make a mistake about just how much sensory input is needed to give a sense of living in a virtual world. Being able to see and hear is - for those not blind or deaf - enough for most people, in the same way that 2D films are enough without the need for being 3D. Sealing off your vision and hearing from the real world isn't absolutely necessary.

I remember playing a 3D game in the arcades in the early 90s. You had a head set, and stood on a platform where you could turn and move in any direction. Its flaws were a much too basic screen resolution, and tendency to make the user motion sick. Never caught on, because 2D games were enough.

That fact that Night Own and Silk Spectre just wade through the attacking prison inmates without effort or caring, didn't sit well with me when I saw the film for the first time. That was something Rorschach might do, but not them. The difference between them was a small degree in the film, whereas it was a gulf in the graphic novel. Conversely I thought the simplification of Ozimandias's plot, blaming Doctor Manhattan, made more sense overall. Either way, Gilliam was right- the story would work much better as a miniseries.

Even so, the motion comic version, which was mostly animating panels from the graphic novel, felt like a damp sqib when watched. It had none of the emotional depth the graphic novel did, partly perhaps because ALL CHARACTERS were voiced by actor Tom Stechschulte! It felt more like a reading of the original for an audio book, and, well bleaugh. There's a rumour that there's going to be a "proper" R-Rated animated version of the story. I think a decent direct and a live action version would be so much better.

Having watched SEVEN SAMURAI, 60s version of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, and BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (oh, and SAMURAI 7, a 26 episode anime that adds a space theme to the original), I think this has long become a trope like OCEANS [WHATEVER]. Right, I have the first outline of the script for the introduction to the 2nd story. All done in Scrivener, and should be 30 pages long. The image below shows the file-card view of these. The next step is to fill in these pages with a proper script, from which I can figure out a list of characters, locations, sets and props I'll need for the first shoot.

I watched a library DVD copy of this last night. I'd grabbed it off the shelf without reading the blurb on the back. Found it an excellent pastiche of several 19th literary genres. Very steampunk while being more as well.
