I also went berserk in JBs today buying DVDs on special: Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers (I suspect an aborted pilot for a series); Cloud Atlas (by three directors); Astro Zombies (a classic nonsense film); and the 1969 standalone film Skippy and the Intruders. Am watching the Bab5 film as I type. Everyone's quirky but G'Kar kicks ass!

I wasn't entirely sure what to make of this.

I wasn't entirely sure what to make of this. I like OpenSim, though it seems closer to the open-source release of Second Life that it was based on, than a lot of the VR stuff in development now, or just released. And OpenSim  is primarily a a way of creating virtual worlds first, virtual reality second.  Most times for me it resembles a third person view video game, an that's OK. With my vision (on bifocals now) it's unlikely that I'll be using some form of VR headset (though I'll certainly try them out), and immersion is key to VR. Your senses have to convince you that what you experience is real. In OpenSim though, it's more that you identify with your avatar.

I'm happy with that, but who knows what's going to be adopted wholesale as a VR system of choice? The chances are though that (like video recorders and personal computers) initially there will be lots of different VR systems about but that later 2-3 will become far more popular than the others and set the standards.  If I read this article correctly, it's suggesting that these different systems would be better served by being translatable to each other, so that a user in one system  could travel to another, perhaps bringing their virtual assets with them.

If that's the case, then there might be any number of virtual worlds and virtual destinations you'll be able to visit, provided (I'm guessing) you have the right hardware to do so.

One of the classic set pieces from Sense8, with a classic closing line. If you're confused about who the other guy is standing and talking with the first guy (who is also kneeling down on the ground), go watch the series, created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski for Netflix (and there's a 2nd season on the way)..

I've been listening to the CD collection of this story.

I've been listening to the CD collection of this story. Some things are a bit "formal", but others are fun as well. Lemmy is the show's "everyman" who has a way with a witty retort. So far they've lost TWO ships on the way to Mars, and there's a mystery developing over a crew member who acts "oddly".

Good stuff to listen to while cleaning up.

Such a beautiful sounding song about doubt and uncertainty.

Such a beautiful sounding song about doubt and uncertainty.

Peeling the skin back from my eyes I felt surprised
That the time on the clock was the time I usually retired
To the place where I cleared my head of you
But just for today I think I lie here and dream of you

I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in
But if the sweat pours out, just shout
I'll try to swim and pull you out

A howling wind that blows the litter as the rain flows
As street lamps pour orange colored shapes, through your windows
A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes
Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile

I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in
But if the sweat pours out, just shout
I'll try to swim and pull you out

You probably don't care - either because you never heard of this, or you tried it and found it ridiculously primitive (as witnessed by this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COSkTwVF8-c) - but the ExitReality browser plugin is now thoroughly dead. What it it did was make your browser (Explorer and Firefox only) work as a VRML browser.

You had an avatar of sorts and in general you could move around and teleport  to VRML spaces. And the spaces themselves were strange versions of regular web pages (like 3B), specially constructed sites, or a home page that you could customise (mine was an ocean beach house). The trouble with ExitReality (and 3B as well) is that it supplied an unwanted solution for for a non-existant demand - 3D web pages).  There was no or little advantage to viewing a web page in 3D, and several disadvantages (moving an avatar is generally more clumsy and slower than just moving a mouse).

But, for a potential idea, it still ran for eight years after its launch. There were memorable sites, like the Forest that 18th century steam engines tucked away in temples of science (and a strange rotating sculpture of a horn),  a recreation of Glasgow University, a port in Portugal, Xmasland, the Exit Reality Plaza (complete with portals to a virtual Carl Jnr store, and a Warner Bros vitual cinema. But they seemed more bizarre experiments than a serious attempt at a 3D usable space. Like Prototerra (which had a veteran's memorial in a park)  we shall probably not see its like again.

Old Air Traffic Controller Games

Old Air Traffic Controller Games
Years ago, I used to play a DOS game called ATC. It has black & white ASCII graphics and you controlled planes by by shorthand commands ("XA4" for exampl woul tell plane X to go to altitude 4). Just now I went and searched for the game, and finally found it at http://atc.fastie.com/index.htm.  But I also found a slew of other from that period, which I knew nothing about until now: You'll probably need a DOS emulator to play most of these.

I watched this film on the plane trip home.

I watched this film on the plane trip home. It's the only film I think would be improved if it were in Danish with subtitles. Obviously meant to be an "Art Film" than a biopic. I felt like it referenced famous paintings all the way through, but ones that I was unaware off. Redmayne's portrayal couldn't get any more "fey" if he tried.

Also, VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN, which I also watched on that trip (and which featured Danial Radcliffe as "Igor") was MUCH MORE INTERESTING! :-P
