Saw the film.

Saw the film. I can understand why people hated it, because it's NOT the universe they see in the comics. I thought it was an "OK film, for Zac Snyder, but that's not great praise from me. he pinched stuff from the Excalibur, as well as other films. I do like the version of Alfred in this, and Ms Prince is a passable Wonder Woman, if under developed.

Lex, I'm not so sure about. The Batman in this film could easily take on Iron Man from the Marvel films and WIN, but the Tony Starke character in this film is really Lex Luthor.  Quote of the film:

I.m thinking of seeing BATMAN vs SUPERMAN today, but am not keen on the session times.

I.m thinking of seeing BATMAN vs SUPERMAN today, but am not keen on the session times. Might have to see it in 3D and VMax.

I've seen lots of negative reviews of it. I liked Man of Steel mostly (though Zod's killing was mishandled). But none of the DC films for different characters seem to connect like the Marvel ones do. This is NOT the same universe that the Dark Knight Trilogy was set (more's the pity).

And the other thing is, it's directed by Zack Snyder, who also directed several films I was either disappointed with (Watchmen), offended by (Suckerpunch) or consider to have been misguided comedies (300). His worst fault is try to stuff TOO MUCH into one film.

To me this makes a difference because I grew up in the 60s on DC comic reprints. I just fear that while these characters may be dressed the same, that really they're nothing like either.

But we'll see.

I also popped into Graphic Action. It seems the library copy of the graphic novel Hicksville by Dylan Horrocks  has gone missing, so I thought I'd see if i could buy one (I can but they have to order it in). Anyway, I happened upon THIS and bought it on the spot. I used to read ESCAPE comic magazine in the 80s (from Britain) and it featured this character in it. Written and drawn by Hunt Emerson, poor old Calculus Cat keeps up a cheery exterior and has perpetual fights with his TV set. Very funny.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a hundred times, I love old piers. No, don’t put me down as undecided, old piers are awesome. If for no other reason than they provide a leading line into the infinity of the sea. They point outward and beyond, they are metaphors for the journey of life. How’s that for heavy thoughts along with my images? I know, as long as it’s not heavy breathing then it’s okay. As a land lubber a pier for me points outward to sea. However if you are at sea, it’s a bridge back to shore. There are so many implications that it just blows my mind. Okay, the men in white coats just showed up, I need to take my meds now. But really, don’t you think old piers are great?

And of course the long ballad was standard in Prog Rock, like this one which seems to be about humanities spread among the stars with all the implied space opera you muster. I always heard "Starship Troopers" after this song, like it was an epilogue to the story in this song, after the "Death defying, mutilated armies" were long gone.

I mostly listened to stuff like this alongside albums by Hawkwind, to both while I was typing out fanzines in the 70s. All nostalgia now I guess.

I do like my superhero flicks but am not sure about this one.

I do like my superhero flicks but am not sure about this one. The Age of Ultron was sort of OK, but the ending was  a lot like the first Avengers film, with the gang wading through waves of enemy troops.

The series this is based on had a solid cause in it - the superhero registration act - where superfolk in the USA were expected to register their secret identities  with the government. Stark had no problem with that because his non-Iron Man identity was common knowledge, and being a billionaire meant he never worried about people coming after him. In the comics, Spider (on Starke's encouragement) reveals that he's Peter Parker, with plenty of consequences!

In the comics the waves of enemy troops were the superfolk (heroes and villains) for and against registration, including X-Men, and Fantastic Four. and lots of the back catalogue of characters in the Marvel universe. But - because the Marvel Universe is split three ways, we're unlikely to get that mass battle. Instead we'll get Spidey and Scarlett Witch making guest appearances, with Black Panther being introduced as well. I reckon Ant Man would be against registration as well, but I don't think he appears in the film.

So, this mike be OK, but it's also a Captain America film, so a certain outcome that was in the comics, is unlikely to happen. But we'll see I guess.

I finished the 2nd volume of this today.

I finished the 2nd volume of this today. One gigantic story in 8 chapters of over a thousand pages of comics, drawn in what might be considered  a "European Style". That is, it looks little like the other manga from the time.

I love the film version of this, but really it was an abridged and re-scripted version of the the first chapter and a bit. Like Akira (which has a 2000+ page count itself), lots of plot twists and turns way more characters who never made it into the film. And the death toll! Thousands of humans dead by the end of the saga, including a good portion of the main and supporting characters.

But I really love the story. Nausicaa is a heroine who fights when she needs to, but offers an alternative to blind conflict. Good stuff.

I re-watched EQUILIBRIUM which is an old favourite. Christian Bale plays a Cleric of the Tetragrammaton, a post-apocalyptic group that keeps the peace by doping the emotional extremes out of the populace. The Cleric and their minions hunt down the underground, who are a bunch of "sense offenders" and and hide works of art, music and literature.

Filmed as more of an allegory, I love it for something called "Gun Kata" (a form of Gun fu, and the action scenes where Bale's character wipes the floor with all comers. Pretty sure this film is why Bale got to be Batman. For me, this film was about the only "imitator" of THE MATRIX that worked.
