Well, I managed to see the live action GHOST IN THE SHELL.

Well, I managed to see the live action GHOST IN THE SHELL. Um, I was appalled at how much "exposition dump" there was in the film, and the miscasting of some of the section 9 members. However, the main character was NOT miscast or "whitewashed" as claimed, within the context of the plot. There is a REASON she looks European. Either way this is NOT the same character from the anime,she actually "more human".

Otherwise, I think they'd "dumbed down" and simplified the plot to the extreme, rewriting the original anime film so that there was a clear villain. But I guess that's because really, like "Man of Steel" this is an ORIGIN film, meant to INTRODUCE the characters. That only works if there are more films with them in, and I really don't know if that will be the case.

Also, what's really spooky is watching iconic scenes from the original film being recreated, but in many ways out of context and jumbled around. Um,

I watched STAR ODYSSEY in the Cinema on first release (I bet you there was no 2nd release). The Liberty cinema would usually show various art, grunge, and cult, and Chinese martial arts films. This film was worse than mentioned here. And STAR CRASH I think I rented a video tape. I know I've seen it, but that's well over 25 years ago.

Of course BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS is more a ripoff of The Magnificent Seven (itself a version of Seven Samurai) than Star Wars. I hadn't realised that Corman had ripped off his own film. Years ago (1990?) I taped a late night SF film which might have been Message from Space. It was Japanese with poor subtitles, and what stuck in my mind was that when we froze the tape at a scene showing the controls of the spacecraft, you could clearly see that it was a spreadsheet program for controlling warehouse inventory!

I've always wanted to see that version of THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME, after reading a plug for it in STARBURST magazine way-back-when, since I'd just read th ebook and seen the 30s film version of it. But you can't find it anywhere!

OK, saw the 1st episode of season 10. It was OK, Not so sure about WHOVIANS though, which was on ABC2 afterwards. It's fun to watch a TV show featuring fans of Doctor Who, but maybe it is all really over thinking things. Bill seems a reasonable companion.

Also the episode fits in with the pattern established for major companions of the Doctor in the new series. That is: 1st episode is mostly set in contemporary times; the with the 2nd and 3rd episodes, one will be set in the future, and one in the past. That pattern applies to Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, and Clara (go check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_serials and see).

In an effort to jump-start something in me - as per "refreshing the well" - I've just re-read the 8 volume Pluto by Takahi Nagasaki and Nagki Urasawa. It faithfully retells an old Astroboy story The Greatest Robot in History, but also expands it in background and depth.

And I am very impressed with Urasawa's artwork. While making the characters his own, he captures the essence of the Tezuka originals. Atom, Uran, and many others are very recognisable. Some characters like Gesicht are re-imagined in a major way, and entirely believable characters. Sometimes in the English collection, like http://goodokbad.com/assets/images/books/pluto_05.jpg, the colours are used subtly but effectively. Tezuka had a huge influence on me when young. The original anime versions of Astroboy and Kimba were childhood stables. Of course Tezuka's style was a deliberate iconic simplicity, whereas Urasawa's is a more realistic one. Both versions of the story inspire me, but I can't just imitate either. I need to find my inner spark and style again, and run with it.

Have been thinking about this all day.

Have been thinking about this all day. I think I'm afraid of losing my drawing ability, and a few other losses as well. The image below contrasts stuff I draw when I'm OK, and after a "session". It's like my drawing ability is only running at 20% capacity. To complicate things I've started to feel encroaching arthritis in my fingers. It may only be the weather, but it's still a worry.

I know though, I need to get back into my art practise, but there's a huge amount of fear and anxiety around that since last year. Not good.
