When Star Wars was first released, I saw it in the cinema 13 times.

When Star Wars was first released, I saw it in the cinema 13 times. Since then I've seen it any number of times on TV, especially if they're just about to release a new film. But all the other films, Star Wars or not, I generally see only once in a cinema, and maybe twice if I really like it, or (like ROGUE ONE) if I see it again with a friend.

Haven't played any Hawkwind for a while. Saw them live at the Metro back in 2000. Was my first great love of music on vinyl in the 70s (followed by Yes).  I got high on their music without taking any drugs (which is clearly what their music of this era was all about).

Likewise, Rogue One.

Likewise, Rogue One. It’s not about young people growing up...  ...All the primary characters in Rogue One are all already grown up and morally compromised in one way or another. The rebellion is not the simple and clean moral engine for good it was portrayed as before; there’s lots of gray around its edges and in its practices, and its sole moral advantage is that the Empire truly is just plain fascistic evil.

Yeah, I liked this about the film as well.

I finally got around to watching Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), which was on local TV after the much better A Big Hand for a Little Lady. There seemed an awful lot of inaccuracies in it, but what struck me most was the set of the gunfight  in the title. It appears to be the same set as the one used for Rio Bravo(1959) !

It has a series of derelict walls and buildings on one side of a dry creek (see https://pages.shanti.virginia.edu/Wild_Wild_Cold_War/files/2011/11/RioBravo47-e1321342965429.jpg for an example), and a variety of service buildings on the other side.  There's no warehouse because that hasn't been built yet. But the creak, and a very particular half demolished wall with a hole in the middle of it, both clearly feature in Rio Bravo!

How cheap! I wonder what other films that western town set's been used in?

One of the things I liked about ROGUE ONE was the new varieties of Empire Troppers shown.

One of the things I liked about ROGUE ONE was the new varieties of Empire Troppers shown. We have the death Squad, Tank Commanders, and Tropical designs (as per the image here). More detail on the last variety at http://actionfiguresdaily.com/kotobukiya-star-wars-rogue-one-scarif-stormtrooper-artfx-statue-2-pack/. It makes sense to me. A general purpose Trooper is what we saw in A New Hope, but if you were working in a tropical zone, you'd want a uniform that would "breathe more".

There were also new  versions of AT-Ats, but I shan't bother a link to those. And besides, knowing about all these variations ells you NOTHING about the plot of the film that will spoil it for you.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Waiting

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Waiting
PlayStation 4 (my first ever video console) arrives today along with some games including a baseball game. The order was placed Tuesday and the Package Tracker tells me it has left the local carrier facility and is On Time. As packages have arrived early before, I first checked the Tracker yesterday, just in case.

It's an amazing thing really, if you stop to think about it.

I remember the first baseball game I ordered. It was 1965 and I was ten years old. It was the first time I placed an order and experienced the waiting. It was the (then) standard, "Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery."

If you were ten years old then, time could be measured in three increments - Now; Four to Six weeks; and Forever.

Some years later Tom Petty sang, "The waiting is the hardest part." He was right. But it's easier than it used to be. :)

So, without giving the plot away, what did I think of ROGUE ONE? Short version: I LOVED IT!

So, without giving the plot away, what did I think of ROGUE ONE?  Short version: I LOVED IT!

Long version:
This isn't a story directly in "the Skywalker saga" and we already know roughly when it takes place (BEFORE the Death Star is destroyed) but really, if you think of this as being a "war film", that really doesn't matter. I mean, you can watch and enjoy Where Eagles Dare even though you know the outcome of WWII (not so Inglorius Basterds)!  So, the film is really a character study, and in particular of the six individuals who make up "Rogue One". There's plenty of Star Wars tropes shown in the film, and some one says they have "a Bad Feeling" about things!

Because of the period, there's also some characters we've seen before from A New Hope, and while they're done really well, I found them more than a little creepy to watch. But otherwise, the details were right  overall, and it it looked the right period. Mostly it resembles 633 Squadron, crossed with The Magnificent Seven/Kelly's Heroes  with a dash of the Force for good measure.  And - which I rather liked - it doesn't have the "three act play" structure that a lot of films did. More like six episodes of The Clone Wars (which I loved) strung together.

Worth a watch, for sure.

I spent less than half the day coding up that Second Life thing (the rest was watching TV with Theo in a cooler lounge). And that was a comedy of errors. I'm more "hacking" code than writing it (I accidentally used the same channel for all my dialogs). Next is creating a simple YES/NO dialog but that seems a humungous thing under the LSL! :P

Anyway Today's been a bit cooler, and a storm is promised (THUNDER PLEASE!!!!). Tomorrow I'm off to Charlestown Sqr to watch the latest Underworld flick. It should be terribly hammy but enjoyable (like the last one).  Have you noticed how easily Selene misplaces her relatives? ;)

I can remember watching the BBC versions of Shakespeare's plays in the 70s and 80s - some of which had Patrick Stewart in them. And Earlier this year I watched (on DVD) the first part of "The Hollow Crown" cycle: Richard II, Henry IV part I, Henry IV part II, and Henry V. Bloody good versions of Shakespeare! But it wasn't until last week I realised that they'd made part two:  Henry VI part I & Henry VI part II (the original 3 plays have been redivided into 2) and Richard III, and SBS are showing these on their demand site.

Now I've seen several versions of Richard III, but none of the Henry VI plays. I used to play a game called Kingmaker which was all about the War of the Roses ("ships take refuge in nearest port!") so I'm familiar with the history. But these plays put all that at a very personal level, explaining the motives, and the events that led to those events. Not that Shakespeare is terribly accurate. Remember, he was writing these (propaganda) plays under the Tudor dynasty, so Henry VII is ultimately shown to be the fair and rightful winner. And yet, in Henry VI part 1 - which I've just watched -

I love the mix of historical characters in this play - Joan of Arc cursing the English with her dying breath, King Henry being too pious naive for his own good, and  Warwick, ever the opportunist.  That casting in these versions is great. Patrick Stewart, Jeremy Irons, Tom Hiddleston (as Prince/King Hal, no wonder he played Loki), Julie Walters, John Hurt, Hugh Bonneville (playing what might be thought of as the "Ned Stark" role in Henry VI pt 1), Laura Frances-Morgan, David and Michael Troughton, and, I understand, Part II Benedict Cumberbatch in the next two plays as Richard III!

So, I'm loving these plays. Well done.

Fairly accurate.

Mind you the bit about getting the bad guys to fight the bad guys we got to save the world? Well, Avengers shot themselves in the foot as well in the Age of Ultron. If Tony had just left the staff alone, NONE of that film would have happened.

And I actually like the Joker ion this film. He's consistently nuts, a knife fighter, and suits the Batman of that universe.

Of course, this is in the TV show.

Of course, this is in the TV show.. I don't know about the current comic (if she has one at the moment). When I grew up in the 60s, Supergirl, along with Green Lantern and The Flash) was one of my favourite characters, Back then however, she was presenting as Linda Danvers and expressing told by her jerk cousin to keep herself a secret. Hence many stories were about (super) pets, potential romances and situations where Kara has to get her stuff done and still keep her existence secret. Looking back I can see how the trope of superhero secret identities might be taken as a metaphor of "being in the closet". The most blatant  of these was the X-Men in the late 70s / early 80s, where being a mutant could easily be seen as an equivalent to being queer.

I like the Supergirl TV series, because for me it has those elements of *no*t being a straight superhero narrative. Kara's relationship with her b\two "bosses" Cat Grant: and Hank Henshaw / Martian Manhunter  show a development in marurity for her. Also, the fact that Kal-El doesn't make a real appearance until season 2 shows how the focus is kept on Kara as her own self, rather than a Superman knock-off. Yes, we have a "villain of the week",  but the real action in the show is between the ensemble cast, and how they deal with each other and the ongoing events.

So, pleased about this development. I hope Alex finds happiness :).

What interests me, is that it was designed by GARRY NEWMAN. Transpires though, that it's not that Gary Numan. Pity.

The Cosmos: Macro versus Micro

☼ The images on the left are night views of brightly lit metropolitan cities taken from the International Space Station. On the right, are fluorescent images of neurons. Like a neuron, the city seems to have a cell body, branching dendrites and a main axon like highway extending out.

☼ The ancient Greeks of the Neo-Platonic school of philosophy saw  the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos, from the largest scale (macrocosm or universe-level) all the way down to the smallest scale (microcosm or sub-sub-atomic or even metaphysical-level). In their philosophy, Man is in the middle.

☼ Did you know that the word cosmos (Greek, κόσμος) means "order" and is the conceptual opposite of "chaos"? In Mandarin Chinese, cosmos and universe are both translated as 宇宙 yǔzhòu, which means "space-time".

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.”

See Me

Are you ready to solve this week's science mystery picture and pick up the latest in research along the way? If you know the identity of this object, don't give it away , but share some interesting (or obscure!) fact about it. Don't be shy, let your imagination fly.

Hint: This object has the fastest response to light in the biological world.

Why is this cool? A recent study revealed the unexpected finding that the initial response to light was mechanical: light triggered tiny (less than one micrometer) synchronized contractions in this array that then opened mechano-sensitive ion channels to change distribution of electric charge across the surface. This form of signaling is known as mechanotransduction and is faster than more conventional chemical signaling. Do you know of a human sense that uses mechanical signaling?

Image Detail: False colored scanning electron micrograph that is magnified 2,500 times if printed at 10 cm.

Little Panda Fighter? Gasp, I found this looking for another Kung Fu Panda knock-off, the adventures of panda warrior (because apparently Rob Schneider has a voice role in that)!

Here is a easy to understand and thoroughly researched article by David Kariuki of Hypergrid Business on how to set up the Outworldz Opensim Installer. Timely, too. since I was just about to report that the bug in 0.9.1 that prevented people from Hypergridding In/Out is finally fixed. Version 1.1 is now available with the patch. If you tried an older version and gave up. or skipped the updates, look in Help->Check for Updates to get it.

I'm not done yet, but I will be cutting back on the update schedule now that the goal of a free and easy Opensim for Windows has finally been met.
