I have to admit, I hate this film. Emotionally it makes Ripley's triumph in Aliens a piece of crap. Also, I think Ressurection was much worse.

For some reason the main map only updated on one of the stand alone grids I have.
For some reason the main map only updated on one of the stand alone grids I have. I could not find the reason for this, so in the end I just copied the OpenSim.ini file over to the Urbania grid and it ran fine.
I also uploaded the terrain files for the Twin Islands and that went fine. I now have a 30 sqr km canvas to create sets on. Of course stretching the maps has flattened everything as well, but now I can build towns and factories to realistic scales.
I'm actually enjoying this again. Nothing made sense towards the end of last year but now either it does, or I find a way to work around stuff anyway. :D

I remember watching the full version of this, which was broadcast locally in three parts, on the ABC in the 80s. It's all an allegorical tale (the IMDB describes the plot as The epic battle for the future of mankind is fought between an angel of light and an angel of death), but I remember this sequence, in an unnamed European city suffering from an epidemic, very well. It effectively represents being lost in a foreign land. The whole thing's on Youtube now in 13 parts and best watched in short bursts.

Lemmy Caution is a fictitious Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent—or in later stories a private detective—created by British writer Peter Cheyney (1896–1951), who published the first book about him in 1936.
What I hadn't realised about Alphaville, was that it was only one of at least ten Lemmy Caution films!

I've been watching the 1st season of this on local TV.
I've been watching the 1st season of this on local TV. Even though it's mostly based on the first Highlander film - with Duncan instead of Connor MacLeod - it seems mostly a crime drama where tough guy MacLeod saves Tessa and Richie from trouble. Being immortal means that like Angel it's often a "flashback show" with snippets of MacLeod's past being dished up to the viewer.
But usually the other immortals seem to appear way to frequently, and with McCloud never losing his own head, their headless bodies litter the streets of where ever this is supposed to be. MacLeod's a "person of interest" but the police seem willingly incompetent. I know it gets better in season two, when the watchers - people who hunt immortals - turn up. There is something odd about MacLeod's accent as well.
But what I find particularly annoying is the regular opening credits (starting at :0:30 in the attached clip). The song's by Queen, but it seems grating in retrospect.

Sort of stumbled on to this, or rather Cathy did. There's an intensity in this video I find disturbing. In another video the guy had a claw machine trying to get large drink containers and kept shaking the machine to get the last one out.
Um, they might be a bit addicted to these.

This article is unintentionally funny, because to me it seemed clear that the author hadn't even used Second Life let alone High Fidelity. Virtual worlds is not an answer to the Fermiparadox - it merely pushes the problem back one level.
I think there's no paradox yet, just lots of unknown variables which encourage lots of reckless speculation. That tends to feed on one's prejudices and preconceived notions.

Is Virtual Reality the Surprising Solution to the Fermi Paradox?
'From time to time, the Singularity Hub editorial team unearths a gem from the archives and wants to share it all over again. It's usually a piece that was popular back then and we think is still relevant now. This is one of those articles. It was originally published August 20, 2015. We hope you enjoy it!'
'... Perhaps, it’s reasonable to assume that over time, our virtual worlds will become indistinguishable from our current reality.
Soon, we won’t visit the Internet from the glass window of our computer screens, but rather walk around inside it as a physical place. Philip Rosedale, the creator of Second Life, recently announced plans for a bold new virtual universe with a potential physical game map as large as the landmass of Earth. Essentially, he’ll create a virtual world with its own laws of physics, and once he’s pressed play, a newly formed universe will have its own “let there be light” creation moment.
Where we go from there will be stunning to watch.
As we continue our plunge into virtual spaces, the validity of the transcension hypothesis will come into sharper focus. If technology trends toward a world of microscopic computers with infinitely complex realities inside, this might explain why we can’t see any alien neighbors. They’ve left us behind for the digital wormholes of their own design.
...'
