I recently bought the DVD set for Into the Badlands season 1 because I thought it was an adaptation of this. As it transpires it isn't, but the differences seem very minor. One has feudal lords who use fighters to settle disputes, and the other has corporation using fighters to settle disputes. Ohhh!

I also visited SL14, the annual birthday party (see http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL14B%20Spectacular/37/194/71). Always spectacular, with nine regions of stuff, but if I thought SLPride was laggy, well the SL birthday parties (for me) ALWAYS take ages to load (see the image of Elsie on the tour). But, wow!

I visited SLPride just now (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Pride/128/128/2). I didn't stay long as I'm a bit fatigued, but I went on a (very slow) roller coaster, walked around the promenade (which took ages to rezz) visited a memorial (with candles for the dead, walked through a Japanese styled park, and had a quick look at the dance. It was terribly laggy for me. I might pop back, but I have a real life overseas guest staying with me from tonight, and want to spend time with her.

I'm thinking of finally buying this, while it's under $A 30 (sale ends on the 6th). I thought I'd check out the curator's comments, and they're a pretty mixed bunch.
The adverse ones decry the fact that you're EXTREMELY UNLIKELY to meet another player, and sometimes about missing features. The plus comments are all about how glorius it is. To tell the truth, I'm more interested in it as aan engine to generate machinomics (comics created from video games/virtual worlds) with!

Something's been bugging me since I saw "World Enough and Time" last night at Whovians, and that's just how much this two parter might remember the two part finale of s8, "Dark Water" and "Death in Heaven". Both involve the Master/Missy creating Cybermen, and making a companion into one - Danny Pink in s8, and Bill in s10.
This can't just be a coincidence. We've had nasty stuff happen to companions in series 8, 9, and 10. Danny (yes, I include Danny as a companion) is killed, revived, and converted to a Cyberman where he finally dies, having shown - like Yvonne Hartman in "Doomsday" - that a strong promise or commitment trumps emotional removal and cyber control. In series 9 Clara is killed because she tried to behave like the Doctor. And despite the Doctor not being able to save her - since he can't double back on the event because he's been there - he manages to retrieve her before she dies. Not that this ends well for the Doctor. And now we have Bill, seemingly sharing Danny's fate. So, in three consecutive series, the Doctor's lost three companions !
But there's more similarities. Bill has been converted into a Cyberman, and one of the Claras was converted to a Dalek. Also consider Missy last series tricking Clara into a Dalek shell so that she might get killed by (or accidentally kill) the Doctor. And here we have the Master tricking Bill into conversion. So where does this get us?
Let's assume that the Master we saw in "World Enough and Time" is a later version of the same Master we last saw in "The End of Time, and who disappeared with Rassilon and the others from Gallifrey. This might seem obvious, but for all we know he could just be a much later Master who's gone back to a "favourite face". Remember, both the Doctor and the Master lie. We also assume that Missy is a later regeneration. If - as presented - this is the case, then Missy creating an army of Cybermen for the Doctor, might be based on what happens in the current story, a misread memory after the Master regenerated into Missy. It would explain (in part) Missy tricking (a) Clara into the form of the Doctor's enemy, because she'd already done it as the Master with Bill!
So why would Missy have been so "luvey dovey" with the Doctor? Well we have two time lords with a potential of THREE regenerations coming up soon. We KNOW that the Doctor will regenerate, but it's also likely that either the Master or Missy will regenerate as well (we know that Michele Gomez is leaving the show). My guess is that BOTH regenerate. But let's backtrack for a bit.
Adam Richards (of Whovians) has suggested that the Doctor has been in the process of regeneration all through series 10. Perhaps rather than rigging the execution equipment so that Missy wasn't executed, instead he GAVE her some of his REGENERATIONS (or regeneration energy) instead. But the only way for him to do that was during a regeneration himself. So maybe the scene at the start of "World Enough and Time" isn't a flash forward to the end of the series at all, but a flashback to after that event. The Doctor refuses to regenerate because he can't guarantee what "the new guy" will do. He stays on for almost one thousand years. so that at least she can be freed at the end of her incarceration. However, delaying the regeneration by such a long period would have its toll. This is why he could restore his sight, and why his injury on his left hand (still bandaged in ep 11) hasn't healed.
So, here we are at the very end of that one thousand years, with the Doctor, the Master, and Missy. There's a good chance that the Cybermen will turn on the Master, so he will probably be fighting with the Doctor (for a short time). How about, Missy gets hit and starts dying, but DOESN'T regenerate. The Doctor gives her even more regeneration energy enabling her to either regenerate or at least still live, and this takes place in front of the Master. The Master is puzzled but pleased, because he now knows that his future self will survive. Then the Master's hit and starts regenerating - into MISSY! Missy has a vague recollection of what's just happened and is appreciative of the Doctor. The Master-now-Missy escapes. The Missy-now-next-regeneration might also escape.
All this takes a toll on the Doctor and he also regenerates. But he staggers off with Nadole first. And then he regenerates to-
And this I think is the "point" of Bill. I think the Doctor will regenerate to a non-white woman, because of the guilt he feels over Bill's conversion and perhaps later death. We don't see Bill saved, because that's the point. Like the Gallifreyan General who became the new President in series 9, his guilt causes him to make the most drastic change ever!
And that's it. There are variations, of course. The Master may be a LATER version of Missy (which would explain why Missy doesn't remember anything of what he's done). Missy might regenerate to another version of the Simm Master. But these are small details, and don't affect the idea of the Doctor sacrificing himself to save Missy, and feeling guilt of Bill's fate.
Think about it. How many people would be watching the Xmas special see how the new non-white woman Doctor shapes up!

Well, yesterday's excursion to the ABC in Sydney to see WHOVIANS went OK.
Well, yesterday's excursion to the ABC in Sydney to see WHOVIANS went OK. I got back on time so it was a bus home rather than a taxi. Also, I won a DOCTOR WHO MUG in the pre-recording sessions! (yayyy)! From experience I sat closer to where the monitors were, but even so I had trouble hearing everything said on the episode. No worries though, because I got back in time watch both that episode AGAIN on my own TV, but also the same Whovians episode I just attended!
Wahoo - looking forward to Whovians next week when I attend it with Catherine who will have come from New Zealand to be there.

Despite my getting stuff done - a comic page and some gardening - it's been a tough day. With the change of weather I've been dealing with a sinus headache, and feel like I have sandpaper for a brain. So thank heavens for bizarre funny anime on SBS, making me laugh.

I started this comic today.
I started this comic today. As someone with anxiety and depression issues, I see the BABADOOK as an already existing icon of grief, anxiety, depression and suicide, and the use of it as a Pride symbol to be both misguided, and an abelist appropriation of something particular to a disabled minority.
The rest of the comic, which I will work on page by page, will explain that position.

And, I love this.
And, I love this. Moods are transitory, and not the same thing as inspiration, and working on your creative vocation regardless, is necessary for that inspiration to come. It's like a goldmine - you have to dig through a ton of mud and soil, to have a chance of finding a gram of gold.

After I had my blood test at Charlestown this morning I caught a bus to Kotara. After a brunch at Hungry Jacks I wandered into JB HiFi and discovered THE AVENGERS: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION. All six series (well parts of season 1) of the classic British TV show (not to be confused with American superheros). Bought out out of hand. Then on the way home I was able to get THE COMPLETE NEW AVENGERS which collects the spinoff (with Steed, Purdy and Gambit) as well.

Doctor Doom from the 1994 Fantastic Four film.
Doctor Doom from the 1994 Fantastic Four film. The costume is technically accurate in relation to the comics, but um, in execution it's VERY laughable! I guess part of the problem is trying to emote in a metal mask that doesn't move. In the comics you can have have speech balloons which do the emoting, but that doesn't work in a film.

What's a machinomic? According to TV Tropes:
"Machinomics" are comic-styled narratives that combine video game screenshots with player narrative to tell a story. They're like Machinima, only they're the static Web Comics version. They may crossover with other genres of media, or may be played straight.
Most of this collection is about the SECONDS GRID, which I (eventually) use to make machinomics. You can access it via http://secondsdw.outworldz.net:8002/ and you can also see what I've done so far at http://seconds.thecomicseries.com/comics/1/

My waking dream this morning involved a cross between the Potterverse and and a ranch run by people only 3 feet tall, using DNA manipulation. Perhaps not all waking dreams are worth retelling (especially when you awake from it with a splitting headache and a metallic taste in your mouth), but I think I need to create a new comic this weekend (as a means of self-therapy). We'll see.

In 1943, charged to answer for a comic series that was jam-packed with S&M imagery, Marston wrote that “the only hope for peace is to teach people who are full of pep and unbound force to enjoy being bound. Women are exciting for this one reason—it is the secret of women’s allure—women enjoy submission, being bound.”

Years ago I bought the boxed set of the 1997 version of this, based on THIS trailer, which I kept seeing on DVDs I'd borrowed from local libraries. This trailer makes it look like a war between angels and demons. In fact, well it was like THE LAST EPISODE WAS MISSING!

The Floppotron plays music, using floppy disk drives and a scanner. How fitting - a song about nostalgia for obsolete technology. I'm not sure what would be more fitting - Kraftwerk's Computer Love perhaps, or for deeper retro maybe something by Bach. (They call that classical, don't they, not retro.)
But if you like this sort of thing, there's more, much more:

All thisracket mechanical music reminds me that Babbage was once famous for his campaign against organ grinders - they used to serenade him as a kind of cruel revenge:
"""“It is difficult to estimate the misery inflicted upon…multitudes of intellectual workers by the loss of their time, destroyed by organ-grinders and other similar nuisances,” he wrote. He tried anyway, calculating that over the previous 12 years “one-fourth of my working power has been destroyed by the nuisance against which I have protested.” In one 80-day period, he recorded 165 instances of disturbance. “In several of these cases my whole day’s work was destroyed, for they frequently occurred at times when I was giving instruction to my workmen relative to some of the most difficult parts of the Analytical Engine.”
"""

Well, I saw Wonder Woman today, and mostly enjoyed it. mostly enjoyed it.
Well, I saw Wonder Woman today, and mostly enjoyed it. mostly enjoyed it.
I think it's important to remember that this is a comic character here, and one I enjoyed reading back in the '60s. Back then WW was drawn by Ross Andru (though none but Bob Kane was credited for any work back then) and had an invisible flying plane. Most plots were constructed in such a way that Wonder Woman would have to figure a way out of her predicament or outsmart her opponent. It was an age of "How does she get out of this", based on the splash page, which would also over-explain things.
So this is a distinct improvement on that. It captures the quality and mythos that the comics have always aspired to, honouring her origins with some new twists as well. Chris Pine as Steve Trevor does better in this role than Kirk. And David Thewlis (most known as Professor Lupis) does a passable imitation of Ralph Richardson. Ares was a perennial villain in the comics so it's nice to see that character accurately portrayed here. IZack Snyder's input is obvious in the battle scenes
What I find interesting is how Steve Trevor and Etta Candy went from WII to WWI. It's well done, and also writes them out of any sequels. The only thing I hated of the 70s TV version of WW were "the naughty nazis" who were convenient props for any weird plot. But I have to wonder what a German audience might think of this film? I spotted at least four historical slipups (like the fact refers to the kaiser when the historical one had already abdicated and fled to Denmark) but, meh, it's a comic.

Some interesting points in this video. I've actually seen a stage version (complete with musical numbers) of the book when I lived in Perth. It also included the "missing" final chapter in it.
