Have just finished reading this. I enjoyed everything in this book. There's a flow to Gaiman's writing, even when h'e's imitating Doyle and *Raffert*y. And I'm glad I finally read MONARCH OF THE GLEN (which was also included at the end of AMERICAN GODS). It makes me wonder what ele is in the book of the same name? Another short story collection, or a very expanded story, starting back in Chicago?

Might be an idea to find/borrow a copy to read and find out.

I think folk who promote a full immersion VR make a mistake about just how much sensory input is needed to give a sense of living in a virtual world. Being able to see and hear is - for those not blind or deaf - enough for most people, in the same way that 2D films are enough without the need for being 3D. Sealing off your vision and hearing from the real world isn't absolutely necessary.

I remember playing a 3D game in the arcades in the early 90s. You had a head set, and stood on a platform where you could turn and move in any direction. Its flaws were a much too basic screen resolution, and tendency to make the user motion sick. Never caught on, because 2D games were enough.

That fact that Night Own and Silk Spectre just wade through the attacking prison inmates without effort or caring, didn't sit well with me when I saw the film for the first time. That was something Rorschach might do, but not them. The difference between them was a small degree in the film, whereas it was a gulf in the graphic novel. Conversely I thought the simplification of Ozimandias's plot, blaming Doctor Manhattan, made more sense overall. Either way, Gilliam was right- the story would work much better as a miniseries.

Even so, the motion comic version, which was mostly animating panels from the graphic novel, felt like a damp sqib when watched. It had none of the emotional depth the graphic novel did, partly perhaps because ALL CHARACTERS were voiced by actor Tom Stechschulte! It felt more like a reading of the original for an audio book, and, well bleaugh. There's a rumour that there's going to be a "proper" R-Rated animated version of the story. I think a decent direct and a live action version would be so much better.

Having watched SEVEN SAMURAI, 60s version of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, and BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (oh, and SAMURAI 7, a 26 episode anime that adds a space theme to the original), I think this has long become a trope like OCEANS [WHATEVER]. Interestingly I first read HARK, A VAGRANT!, MEGATOKYO, and PENNY ARCADE in printed format from my local library, before I looked at them online. Influence may be one thing, but when your comic or book gets distributed by libraries there's a lot of uncounted readers.

I've been watching this 3 part series, after watching the fifth and final RIPPER ST season. They to be the very opposites of each other. RIPPER ST was the very epitome of a melodrama with everything grungy and morally grey; Reid was trying to navigate that while upholding the law. But in THE SECRET AGENT - based on the novel by Joseph Conrad - everything looks clean and precise and the main character Verloc is trying to not to be exposed as an agent provocateur while doing Russia's bidding. I look forward to part 3.

I uninstalled SANSAR because it never got beyond the updating screen.

I uninstalled SANSAR because it never got beyond the updating screen. A pity. Two years ago I was able to get it to run. And the same with HI FIDELITY. No so today.

I installed HF but trying to run it brought my desktop almost to a standstill. I kept getting "not responding" messages in its title bar, and everything was barely working. At one point I had multiple copies of the "and now lets show you how to move" voice blaring out at me. And this was in the tutorial. Two years ago it worked fine and I was able to explore a bit. It may be something under Windows 10 for all I know. I have an older PC and maybe HiFi is now set to "state of the art".

Anyway, this screenshot I was able to get of it summed up my experience perfectly. I might come back to this next week sometime, after researching performance and attending to more important things.

So, I hadn't bothered with reinstalling Sansar after doing a clean install of Win 10, but I got an email today about it so I thought I'd download the latest version and check it out again. The download went fairly quick, but after installing that and logging in it's been doing THIS for the last 30-40 minutes.

Hmm, a "Blue Mars" forever update? There's a vaguely pleasing ambient muzak playing while this is happening, but I bet that if I fed the pets now, played with my dog and read some more of a comic on Quantum mechanics, it'd still be updating when I got back.

The rough layout of Urbania South. Once again this be be further built on if and when I need a location or set for a webcomic shoot.

Urbania has a large tourist industry (hence Scalliwag Island) partly based on now (mostly) defunct prim mines. Agriculture also featured heavily at one time, including the hemp/flax plantation on South Buggle Island, other crops in South Urbania, and sheep in North East Urbania. Fishing is active in some towns and tourist spots but is no longer a key earner. The big money maker is the trade that comes through the Void Port in the North, and a number of industries established on the back of that, such was Westies Electrics, and Bogan Industrial. Urbania City grew after the disaster twenty years ago wiped out the main town (where the memorial now is) and expanded way beyond Urbania's ability to feed it, so food is imported from the main continent (about 100km North West of Urbania).

The image below shows how the rail lines are supposed to work. Of course if we were to go to scale (the islands are only about 2048m²) you'd probably only get two rail lines - one to the docks, and one to the station at the lower west of the larger island. But things in Second Life and Open Sim are seldom "to scale" but rather figuratively representative. Hence houses are about 1/3 bigger than they would be if they were strictly to scale, but that enlargement allows the avatars to more about freely.

The original Trackmania would allow one to drive anywhere once you fell out of the track. Most folk wouldn't do that, since it wasn't going to get you the next track, and there was lots of wilderness out there.

Many of the old style virtual worlds were compromises in that they weren't continuous 3D spaces, but "3D rooms" (sometimes very large) with trans lights for scenery in the distance or out the window. Vivaty was like that, as was IMVU and the old Kaneva. Twinity still is. In any case you could often just "drop off" that space if the 3D room was sloppily constructed, and you could also - once you found out how - alter to POV and see the scene from the other side!

So, after a chat with my counsellor today, I think I may have made some errors creatively. Or rather, failed to make anything, by going about things the wrong way. This affects two things. The Seconds webcomic, and my Trans Tarot Deck.

SECONDS WEBCOMIC
The Seconds Grid was always conceived as somewhere to shoot a photo-comic. This means that unlike most Opensim grids which are generally either multipurpose, some place to be lived in, or educational, it should consist of locations and sets to shoot in. with props, actors (avatars) costuming to match. But that only works like a film, where there's a script which can be blocked into scenes that have locations and sets, and details about who's doing what to whom. Lately though I've been building more of a "general world". That's OK in some ways because mostly what's there now is essentially a group of standing locations and sets. However, if you're creating a film of a TV episode, you don't build the whole world "just in case" -- you build what you need in order to film the scenes in the story, and retaining (where necessary) locations and sets for future use.

And that's what I need to do. In order to do that I need to write a script for part one of the new story. I have the rough outline in my head, but I need to "put it to paper" first, and build the sets to meet that. Some of this is already done. I mean, I know there will be scenes at the Buggle-Praxis base, at North Buggle Island, at the top of Scalliwag Island, and at Octobriana's flat. But there's more than that, and making a list or outline will direct me in what needs to be completed.

TRANS TAROT DECK
This was an artwork done for my Honours in Fine Arts, and is an allegorical representation of gender transition in a Tarot format. The artwork's complete but I feel I need to have this published as a real tarot deck. Have been dithering over this for a long time.

At the very least I need to find out how and to whom I can submit this for publication, and then work on a submission, and submit it to one or more publishers.

Something to think about, and start working towards.

Have been busy extending rail lines. Anything in yellow has been built. Grey is planned. The idea here is that there's a mix of commuter and goods services. The goods service goes between the Void Port and Industrial Area, to the Docks. The commuter service does loops around both of the islands and the Industrial area. Tourist trains go from West Urbania, up and around North and East Urbania, and arrive at Scalliwag Island (off map).
