So today there was a mix-up with my Doctor's appointment and instead of it being at 10:30a, it was actually at 3pm.
So today there was a mix-up with my Doctor's appointment and instead of it being at 10:30a, it was actually at 3pm. Instead of going home and coming back later, instead I saw VERTIGO which was showing at Event Cinema in Glendale.
While I've seen the film several times (though only once all the way through) on TV (mostly on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon time slot) this was the first time I'd seen it on THE BIG SCREEN. Despite a mix-up with the lighting - overhead lights came on 5 minutes before the end of the film - I found this to be an immersive and enigmatic example of late film noir. It has all the characteristics of that genre, but Hitchcock misleads the audience all the way through. We think that Scottie's the hero of the film, but really he's the villain, with the victim being Madeleine Elster / Judy Barton. This is a bit like PSYCHO where the person we thought was the main character gets killed off in the first third of the film. Midge disappears for the final act and it's clear she's given up on Scottie.
Unlike Psycho, Vertigo shot in vibrant colours which somehow seem half real and half painting in quality. The unsung character in the film is San Francisco of the late 50s. When we look out of Midge or Scottie's window we know damn well that it's a trans-light behind, and later a plethora of back-screen projections at various locations, but both enhance a certain dreamlike quality of the film, highlighting perhaps a deliberate focus on the fake or pretence, which matches the theme of the film.
But it's Scottie that draws the audience in, as he goes from nice guy to fall guy to creek, obsessed with an illusion rather than the reality of the person before him. And that makes people uncomfortable, because hey, that could be you or me! Great film.

Last night I watched the 1998 Godzilla, followed by Batman vs Superman. 8You couldn't get two different films as these. I love the first, because it has Mathew Broderick, Jean Reno, and Hank Azaria in it, and it's a fun if goofy experience. But the Superman vs Batman thing, well it's like someone turned up the "grittiness" dial to max, and everything seemed beaten into dullness because of that. No wonder the next film was dreadful as well.

Elysian Fields not far behind
Find me a witness amongst these shades
They've got to grind, grind it out

Urbania-North got revised as well.
Urbania-North got revised as well. The bit at the top is now the Void Port and refinery. Think Space Port, but for the void. The only entrance to this in the world Urbania exists in, is about 700m above the memorial. Anything going in or coming out usually goes via the Void Port. This is run by McGuffin Industries, which is owned by one of the five "old families" of Urbania (the others being Moreau, Buggle, Weston, and Bogan). The railway connects it with the rest of Urbania.
Most of the islands there have been created from reclaimed land, so have a rather artificial flatness on top.

Despite frustrations, I managed to do some work on the memorial today. Mostly, a parking lot, and walkways were added. The walkway to the tree may need to be moved though, because there's a sim border at one end, and every time my AV would walk there she'd fall into the interior of the prim! D'Oh!

I've visited here before, but am still impressed by Sunbeam Magic's build of AACME CITY in 3rd Rock Grid. It looks lived in, so much so that maybe the inhabitants are merely off the streets for an emergency drill, and will be back soon.

In the first six minutes of watching this film, I already knew who Neil and Chuck were, and exactly what Neil had been flying, because as a child in the 60s I had a booklet on the X-15. Not only that, I had several projects about Apollo 11. This film, despite the main actor having the least amount of lines, was MEANINGFUL to me. The hardest part is knowing what disasters are coming up. I wanted to shout GET OUT OF THE CAPSULE, but but history happens as remembered.
For me, this was very very cool. I cried several times, because those were the times I lived in.

A revised version of what was once the Twin Islands and now Urbania West, in Leveller.
A revised version of what was once the Twin Islands and now Urbania West, in Leveller. This used to be 6x5 512x512 area, but is now a 4x4 area instead. So, a lot simplified. The estuary with the island in the middle came from mistake applying a Perlin4 filter on it. The intent was to roughen a mound that was there, but the filter ate it instead, And I though, what the hell, that's more interesting than a mound!
All of this had been edited in L3DT first and then exported back to Leveller, before being further modded and exported back to Seconds. Before I did that, I created a select based on a height range of -19 to -2, which selected most of the oceans, and the replaced this with Perlin noise. Chaoitc seas!

Another library comic I've recently read.
Another library comic I've recently read. Much better than expected. I thought it was going to be some half arsed adaptation of the film featuring Tom Cruise, but this is an original story by the same writer who was on Hellblaser for years. VERY Hammeresque. They ought to make THIS into a film.

I've started exporting the terrain files. This proved simpler than expected.
I've started exporting the terrain files. This proved simpler than expected.
For example. Buggles-North terrain is exported via this text:
change region bi-03
terrain save c:\GRIDS\SECONDS\(BACKUPS)\Terrain\OStoL3DT\bi-03.ter
change region bi-04
terrain save c:\GRIDS\SECONDS\(BACKUPS)\Terrain\OStoL3DT\bi-04.ter
change region bi-13
terrain save c:\GRIDS\SECONDS\(BACKUPS)\Terrain\OStoL3DT\bi-13.ter
change region bi-14
terrain save c:\GRIDS\SECONDS\(BACKUPS)\Terrain\OStoL3DT\bi-14.ter
change region bi-23
terrain save c:\GRIDS\SECONDS\(BACKUPS)\Terrain\OStoL3DT\bi-23.ter
change region bi-24
terrain save c:\GRIDS\SECONDS\(BACKUPS)\Terrain\OStoL3DT\bi-24.ter
change region root
I just copy and paste this into the BuggleNorth console and it executes one line at a time and the files are saved. I have a set of these for each Region group, created by ALT-Selecting the names column in the Buggle-North console, copy and pasting that into Notepad++, and then running a macro to cut the name on a line and paste the value in with standard text. I only have to make this text once.
To load modified terrain back into the the grid, it's simply a matter of writing the reverse by coping this text and replacing terrain save with terrain load and \OStoL3DT\ with \L3DTtoOS\ (which is a separate directory with modified versions of the terrain). There's a couple of advantages to doing this. Firstly I won't be working on the files in \OStoL3DT\ directly. Rather I'll copy that to another PC where I have L3DT installed, and copy various files into sub-directories to work on different blocks. That way if I stuff it up, I have a clean copy of the terrain on this PC. But also it means I can finely tune the terrain on the other PC for several blocks, and later copy the finished versions back to \L3DTtoOS\ for reloading.
Sounds messy but it's not, and it gives an extra level of backups for the terrain. We'll see how it works in practice.

This second map shows how I plan to export and later import regions between Opensimulator and L3DT.
This second map shows how I plan to export and later import regions between Opensimulator and L3DT. I've written a series of tutorials for doing this with Leveller (see https://asstnotesideas.blogspot.com/search/label/daylonleveller) but it's pretty much the same process with L3DT. In both cases you can import/export a rectangle of 1x1 or larger regions and if these are named correctly, the terrain editors will load those terrains in the correct spot.
For example, I could save the Northern Straight regions terrain as follows...
un-15 to ns_x0_y0.ter,
un-25 to ns_x1_y0.ter,
un-16 to ns_x0+y1.ter, and
un-26 to ns_x1_y1.ter
...and L3DT will load them correctly.
Now I'm using L3DT here for the changes because it's a bit better at doing finicky details on a 3D view. Leveller is far better at planning an original terrain set, and in fact the original of Urbania was done using Leveller. But rather than throw that away I've just re-used the terrains and OARs (in the case of the purple core area) instead, and that's why I'm using L3DT to make it a smooth transition from one region to another.

I'm in the planning stages for major Terraforming using L3DT.
I'm in the planning stages for major Terraforming using L3DT. This requires a bit of planning ahead, or I'll get into a terrible mess. The planning image below was created by adding region names to a screenshot of the in-world map using Photoshop. The newer regions created last weekend are conspicuous as being pin islands, and the dotted lines show planed changes to the coastlines.
As you can see, Urbania west has its own grid numbering, but Urbania South, East and North all have different prefixes but a consistent numbering. (XY locations in terms of 512x512 regions from us-00). It's important to be consistent here to avoid mistakes! I'f I'd used names like "West Elm" and "East Elm" I'm more likely to get confused as to which is where.
I see this in real life a lot. People will get on the West Wallsend bus thinking that either they're going to Wallsend or to a suburb right next to it. It's the same bus number to either, but West Wallsend is 15km west of Wallsend! Personally I think they should either rename one of these places, called West Wallsend "Westies" on the bus sign, or change the bus number depending on the direction it travels (267 to Wallsens and University, 265 to West Wallsend).
Anyway, these Regions can always be renamed later, or just rename the parcels in them.

Reloading OARs precedes at a slow pace.
Reloading OARs precedes at a slow pace. So far so good. Of course just restoring these isn't a final step. The terrain still needs to be edited properly, but it's filling in the coastline and the spaces in-between. Once that happens I can mae "fault lines" like the one here go away. This happens because the oars restored to tthese regions were in different places and rotation in the original design. Not that's a cliff and half!

An update of the planning map, showing the names of the regions with imports over them.
An update of the planning map, showing the names of the regions with imports over them. Anything in BOLD is a new region that would need to be created. Out of those, ue-44 and us-40 are probably optional. A bit of added whimsy so that I could (one day) set up ferry routes along those coasts. It'd be cool to have some form of automated ferry from the Welcome region to the mainland, for visitors who might want to take their time..
Assuming I'm up to it this afternoon, I'll start loading OARs to existing regions.

Greg founded The Chaosium in 1975, and from the outset (to quote his own words) “was never content to imitate, but instead published games that were original in their style of play, content and design”. Under his leadership, the company quickly became renowned for its originality and creativity, and was responsible for introducing numerous things to the hobby that are standards today. As John Wick (7th Sea, Legend of the Five Rings) memorably said, “The older I get, the more I hear young RPG designers say ‘Never been done before!’ And then I just point at something Greg Stafford did a few decades ago.”
Greg’s work in roleplaying games, board games, and fiction have been acclaimed as some of the most engaging and innovative of all time. There will doubtless be many valedictory messages over the coming days from the countless people that Greg inspired and enthused across his many interests and passions - Glorantha, Oaxaca, King Arthur, shamanism, mythology and more.
A pioneer in Role Playing and other games.

After lots of help, I have the revised version of the Seconds Grid. Sratis has been renamed back to Urbania, but I might make it the name of one of the larger urban areas. As mentioned before, the Twin Islands is now Urbania West and Urbania City is part of that. Expect skyscrapers and slums.
The image below shows the region groups set up. Most of the terrain hasn't been made for these areas yet, but will be by the end of the week. It's unlikely that I'll have all the groups running at once.

Often people are unaware of the high-quality immersive learning environments in virtual worlds because they lack accurate and up-to-date search tools. Educators often waste time “reinventing the wheel” without awareness of the educational content created by other educators. By collaborating, sharing resources, and pooling skills and talent, real learning can take place on a larger scale and best practices can be better understood.
This is a good thing.
