When Star Wars was first released, I saw it in the cinema 13 times. Since then I've seen it any number of times on TV, especially if they're just about to release a new film. But all the other films, Star Wars or not, I generally see only once in a cinema, and maybe twice if I really like it, or (like ROGUE ONE) if I see it again with a friend.

This was quite surprising.
This was quite surprising. The building of "ghost cities", where thousands live in areas built for millions, is driven by raw real estate speculation.

This is strangely hypnotic. As someone who spend lots of coins in arcades in the 80s, I'm appalled at the brazen simplicity of throwing one's money at these things!

Peter Cushing's performance of Holmes was the one of the first ones that I remember seeing. Rathbone's precedes this of course, but I didn't see those until after I'd seen Cushing's. I think he nailed Holmes character.

...tonight's the night I shall be talking about of flu the subject of word association football. This is a technique out a living much used in the practice makes perfect of psychoanalysister and brother and one that has occupied piper the majority rule of my attention squad by the right number one two three four the last five years to the memory. It is quite remarkable baker charlie how much the miller's son this so-called while you were out word association immigrants' problems influences the manner from heaven in which we sleekit cowering timrous beasties all-American Speke, the famous explorer. And the really well that is surprising partner in crime is that a lot and his wife of the lions feeding time we may be c d e effectively quite unaware of the fact or fiction section of the Watford Public Library that we are even doing it is a far, far better thing that I do now then, now then, what's going onward Christian Barnaard the famous hearty part of the lettuce now praise famous mental homes for loonies like me. Haven't played any Hawkwind for a while. Saw them live at the Metro back in 2000. Was my first great love of music on vinyl in the 70s (followed by Yes). I got high on their music without taking any drugs (which is clearly what their music of this era was all about).

Likewise, Rogue One.
Likewise, Rogue One. It’s not about young people growing up... ...All the primary characters in Rogue One are all already grown up and morally compromised in one way or another. The rebellion is not the simple and clean moral engine for good it was portrayed as before; there’s lots of gray around its edges and in its practices, and its sole moral advantage is that the Empire truly is just plain fascistic evil.
Yeah, I liked this about the film as well.

Just watched an episode of this on NITV. Sort of interesting, as in mythic figures as super heroes and villains. The animation seems a bit plain, but also seems to suit the subject matter. I do love the different angle to this, just as I also liked Welcome to Wapos Bay and By the Rapids.

I finally got around to watching Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), which was on local TV after the much better A Big Hand for a Little Lady. There seemed an awful lot of inaccuracies in it, but what struck me most was the set of the gunfight in the title. It appears to be the same set as the one used for Rio Bravo(1959) !
It has a series of derelict walls and buildings on one side of a dry creek (see https://pages.shanti.virginia.edu/Wild_Wild_Cold_War/files/2011/11/RioBravo47-e1321342965429.jpg for an example), and a variety of service buildings on the other side. There's no warehouse because that hasn't been built yet. But the creak, and a very particular half demolished wall with a hole in the middle of it, both clearly feature in Rio Bravo!
How cheap! I wonder what other films that western town set's been used in?

One of the things I liked about ROGUE ONE was the new varieties of Empire Troppers shown. We have the death Squad, Tank Commanders, and Tropical designs (as per the image here). More detail on the last variety at http://actionfiguresdaily.com/kotobukiya-star-wars-rogue-one-scarif-stormtrooper-artfx-statue-2-pack/. It makes sense to me. A general purpose Trooper is what we saw in A New Hope, but if you were working in a tropical zone, you'd want a uniform that would "breathe more".
There were also new versions of AT-Ats, but I shan't bother a link to those. And besides, knowing about all these variations ells you NOTHING about the plot of the film that will spoil it for you.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Waiting
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Waiting
PlayStation 4 (my first ever video console) arrives today along with some games including a baseball game. The order was placed Tuesday and the Package Tracker tells me it has left the local carrier facility and is On Time. As packages have arrived early before, I first checked the Tracker yesterday, just in case.
It's an amazing thing really, if you stop to think about it.
I remember the first baseball game I ordered. It was 1965 and I was ten years old. It was the first time I placed an order and experienced the waiting. It was the (then) standard, "Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery."
If you were ten years old then, time could be measured in three increments - Now; Four to Six weeks; and Forever.
Some years later Tom Petty sang, "The waiting is the hardest part." He was right. But it's easier than it used to be. :)

So, without giving the plot away, what did I think of ROGUE ONE? Short version: I LOVED IT!
So, without giving the plot away, what did I think of ROGUE ONE? Short version: I LOVED IT!
Long version:
This isn't a story directly in "the Skywalker saga" and we already know roughly when it takes place (BEFORE the Death Star is destroyed) but really, if you think of this as being a "war film", that really doesn't matter. I mean, you can watch and enjoy Where Eagles Dare even though you know the outcome of WWII (not so Inglorius Basterds)! So, the film is really a character study, and in particular of the six individuals who make up "Rogue One". There's plenty of Star Wars tropes shown in the film, and some one says they have "a Bad Feeling" about things!
Because of the period, there's also some characters we've seen before from A New Hope, and while they're done really well, I found them more than a little creepy to watch. But otherwise, the details were right overall, and it it looked the right period. Mostly it resembles 633 Squadron, crossed with The Magnificent Seven/Kelly's Heroes with a dash of the Force for good measure. And - which I rather liked - it doesn't have the "three act play" structure that a lot of films did. More like six episodes of The Clone Wars (which I loved) strung together.
Worth a watch, for sure.

I couldn't resist going through one of the Hypergates in Craftworld and ended up in https://craft/region/Titanic/114/89/26, which I think might be in the OSGrid. Maybe, I was curious about Astralia which turned out to be CruxAstralia, next to Titanic.
I liked the sprawling 3/4 sim area. It looks bigger than it is, as you can see from above.

I spent less than half the day coding up that Second Life thing (the rest was watching TV with Theo in a cooler lounge). And that was a comedy of errors. I'm more "hacking" code than writing it (I accidentally used the same channel for all my dialogs). Next is creating a simple YES/NO dialog but that seems a humungous thing under the LSL! :P
Anyway Today's been a bit cooler, and a storm is promised (THUNDER PLEASE!!!!). Tomorrow I'm off to Charlestown Sqr to watch the latest Underworld flick. It should be terribly hammy but enjoyable (like the last one). Have you noticed how easily Selene misplaces her relatives? ;)

I can remember watching the BBC versions of Shakespeare's plays in the 70s and 80s - some of which had Patrick Stewart in them. And Earlier this year I watched (on DVD) the first part of "The Hollow Crown" cycle: Richard II, Henry IV part I, Henry IV part II, and Henry V. Bloody good versions of Shakespeare! But it wasn't until last week I realised that they'd made part two: Henry VI part I & Henry VI part II (the original 3 plays have been redivided into 2) and Richard III, and SBS are showing these on their demand site.
Now I've seen several versions of Richard III, but none of the Henry VI plays. I used to play a game called Kingmaker which was all about the War of the Roses ("ships take refuge in nearest port!") so I'm familiar with the history. But these plays put all that at a very personal level, explaining the motives, and the events that led to those events. Not that Shakespeare is terribly accurate. Remember, he was writing these (propaganda) plays under the Tudor dynasty, so Henry VII is ultimately shown to be the fair and rightful winner. And yet, in Henry VI part 1 - which I've just watched -
I love the mix of historical characters in this play - Joan of Arc cursing the English with her dying breath, King Henry being too pious naive for his own good, and Warwick, ever the opportunist. That casting in these versions is great. Patrick Stewart, Jeremy Irons, Tom Hiddleston (as Prince/King Hal, no wonder he played Loki), Julie Walters, John Hurt, Hugh Bonneville (playing what might be thought of as the "Ned Stark" role in Henry VI pt 1), Laura Frances-Morgan, David and Michael Troughton, and, I understand, Part II Benedict Cumberbatch in the next two plays as Richard III!
So, I'm loving these plays. Well done.

Fairly accurate.
Fairly accurate.
Mind you the bit about getting the bad guys to fight the bad guys we got to save the world? Well, Avengers shot themselves in the foot as well in the Age of Ultron. If Tony had just left the staff alone, NONE of that film would have happened.
And I actually like the Joker ion this film. He's consistently nuts, a knife fighter, and suits the Batman of that universe.

Of course, this is in the TV show.
Of course, this is in the TV show.. I don't know about the current comic (if she has one at the moment). When I grew up in the 60s, Supergirl, along with Green Lantern and The Flash) was one of my favourite characters, Back then however, she was presenting as Linda Danvers and expressing told by her jerk cousin to keep herself a secret. Hence many stories were about (super) pets, potential romances and situations where Kara has to get her stuff done and still keep her existence secret. Looking back I can see how the trope of superhero secret identities might be taken as a metaphor of "being in the closet". The most blatant of these was the X-Men in the late 70s / early 80s, where being a mutant could easily be seen as an equivalent to being queer.
I like the Supergirl TV series, because for me it has those elements of *no*t being a straight superhero narrative. Kara's relationship with her b\two "bosses" Cat Grant: and Hank Henshaw / Martian Manhunter show a development in marurity for her. Also, the fact that Kal-El doesn't make a real appearance until season 2 shows how the focus is kept on Kara as her own self, rather than a Superman knock-off. Yes, we have a "villain of the week", but the real action in the show is between the ensemble cast, and how they deal with each other and the ongoing events.
So, pleased about this development. I hope Alex finds happiness :).

Hint: This object has the fastest response to light in the biological world.
Why is this cool? A recent study revealed the unexpected finding that the initial response to light was mechanical: light triggered tiny (less than one micrometer) synchronized contractions in this array that then opened mechano-sensitive ion channels to change distribution of electric charge across the surface. This form of signaling is known as mechanotransduction and is faster than more conventional chemical signaling. Do you know of a human sense that uses mechanical signaling?

I saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at the Reading cinema yesterday.
I saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at the Reading cinema yesterday. It was overall an enjoyable film. Seemed to tick all the boxes of a Potterverse film, including same opening title sequence. I've never read the books and originally saw the films out of sequence, on TV.
I was one of the last three to exit the cinema and after said "There's bound to be a sequel" one of the others replied that there'll be five films in total! Geez, didn't take them long to get the production line up and running! However, I might go see the next one in the cinema.
Also, as I made my way to the toilets, I met a woman who seemed to be in a confused state. I asked her what film she'd just seen and she said it was DOCTOR STRANGE. I told her she was lucky not to see it in 3D! ;)

Elsie got an invite to an event at The Brave CoLab Evolution in Second Life. In typical fashion I got the dates mixed up (the event was on last Wednesday) but I was interested in the area, which is in LEA29. All my alts ae a member of the LEA sandbox, and things of interest always turn up in those areas.

One of the good things about a virtual world is that you can create sites and memorials that can commemorate real life events and issues, and people can visit those from anywhere. This is the Transgender Hate Crime and Suicide Memorial. It was first created back in 2008 (when I first visited it), and has been located at different places over the years. It's also been absent - so I believe - from Second Life for the last two years, so seeing this once inworld is heartening.

RE: BOND
RE: BOND
Consider the fact that Quarrel is featured in Dr No, and later Quarrel Jnr (his son) appears in Live and Let Die (in the novels both were the same character, Quarrel, and Live and Let Die happens BEFORE Dr No). So time has passed in the world, but has it for Bond? If NOT, that's a bit like the Simpson family never aging and yet Sideshow Bob manages to marry and have a child! We have no idea how old Quarrel Jnr was in Dr. No, or even if he'd been born yet. There were 11 years between films. Bond could have visited Quarrel's family after polishing of Dr N, to arrange for compensation, so they may have met. But if it's just a code name how would the family react 11 years later?
If it IS just a code name, then it's not only Bond that has this quality - at least two other characters have it as well: Felix Lighter, and Ernst Stavro Blofeld. We never see the same Felix twice, and though Blofeld does have plastic surgery (pretty good how they cut all that weight and height off him after On Her Majesty's Secret Service) and at one point body doubles, it's clearly NOT the same man. And, what about the fact that Diamonds are Forever features an older Bond agent? Was he just on holiday when the Lazenby version took over the assignment?
Also, I would suggest that the Daniel Craig version of Bond doesn't count, as it's clearly meant to be a REBOOT. Of course there will be a new actor in the next film, but maybe (like the DOCTOR WHO version of this idea where Bond is a Time Lord) that'll be part of a new "regeneration cycle".
I would suggest an alternative. Instead of being a code name, perhaps Bond was the first test subject of an experiment by Universal Exports. He had technology implanted in his head to record and store his memories. When an agent dies, they recover that and implant the memories into a new agent. Perhaps the process overwrites the personality of the new subject as well. In that case they may as well use any test subject to transfer into. Of course the Lazenby problem applies here as well. Or maybe the Bond in Diamonds are Forever was a TWIN of of the first one? This just like conspiracy theory. You can conjecture anything without any need of facts. :P

To be honest the only one I ever noticed was the replacement of Harris, with Gambon.
To be honest the only one I ever noticed was the replacement of Harris, with Gambon. But then I've never read the books, and originally saw the films out of order for one reason or another (never seen them in the cinema, only local free-to-air TV and on airplanes as filler). I did eventually see them all in order, one week apart because they're a regular fixture on channel GO!, which shows the whole saga at least three times a year.
Anyway, without reading the books, I was unaware that some of these (like the inn keeper) were actually the same characters! With others, had not spotted the difference when the actor's under a pile of prosthetics and makeup. Also, I'm not sure if the Voldemort one counts, because Tom Riddle (different ages) was played by at least two actors, and a strange face on the back of a head could have been anyone!

Standing by yourself.
Standing by yourself.
High on the hills above the ocean.
This is where you'd come to walk with your friends.
Strange how it leaves you with no emotion.
You can't fight the undertow.
Not when you're all alone.
You can't fight the undertow.
How long 'til you let go?
Taking one step back.
Trying to pull yourself together.
No matter what you say nothing you do
Can hold back the forces on you forever.
You can't fight the undertow.
Not when you're all alone.

Interesting discussion, mostly about the nature of post-modernism and self-referencing. I wonder though, what will people make of films (and comics for that matter) that use such self-referential stuff further down the track, when the source of those references is no longer obvious?

I especially liked the scene between Dredd and Billy Crystal's character starting at 8m 40s. That was how Dredd would react, alright!

It might sound crazy, but I'm really glad to have cool TV shows to watch.
It might sound crazy, but I'm really glad to have cool TV shows to watch. Especially ones that tap into the source material of my youth. AGENTS OF SHIELD is one such show. I already had a bunch of knowledge about the comic characters in that, and in other shows like JESSICA JONES and DAREDEVIL. I really liked, for example how the origin of THE PUNISHER's shirt logo in DAREDEVIL comes about. It made sense for that character.
When you see something in one of those shows that matches what you've know or read, it really boosts the enjoyment. Which is why, after last night's episode of the above show (which already features NIGHT RIDER), I think we might have seen the introduction of their version of MOLECULE MAN (which this article I just found, agrees on). Whoohoo!!

Which is why, after last night's episode of the above show (which already features NIGHT RIDER), I think we might have seen the introduction of their version of MOLECULE MAN (which this article I just found, agrees on). Whoohoo!!

I was curious about these.
I was curious about these. When I was a teenager a "games console" had four versions of PONG on it in black and white. Big-W have this in their latest catalogue, listing 30 games at a price of $$A 99, but with a note of while stocks last! I wonder which 30 games come with it?

Not so sure about the zero death toll.
Not so sure about the zero death toll. I think emphacema years down the road might be an issue, but maybe that's due to excess smoking.

I'd happily watch him as The Doctor, but I think he needs to sort out the next season of SHERLOCK first!
I'd happily watch him as The Doctor, but I think he needs to sort out the next season of SHERLOCK first! We've been kept hanging on since the "special" (which was pretty good, once you got it). At this rate they'll make the next Downey/Law film before that (which I'd alsao happily watch)!

Well, I went and saw Doctor Strange, and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Well, I went and saw Doctor Strange, and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Not exactly the comic book version, but pretty close in many ways. I loved: the cloak of levitation (best character in the film); the astral traveling and fighting (always happening in the comics); references to The Living Tribunal and other characters and objects found in the comics; the mirror dimension (just glad I didn't see this in 3D); and wushu/magic in general. The only thing that really grated on me was Cumberbatch's fake American accent. They could have made him a British Doctor practicing in New York., and it wouldn't have changed the story much.
The mirror dimension, while visually inspired by Inception is clearly also inspired by Mirrors (2008). Either way it's a good idea and not only explains why no one sees all these magical battles take place, but has its roots (as does the Dark Dimension) in classic Steve Ditko artwork. Things were always in strange alignments with pathways -of-no-visible-support going every which way (e.g. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/16/af/e9/16afe9d09416e5e9c48dc1834d43b01a.jpg and https://www.blackgate.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Steve-Ditkos-Doctor-Strange-3.jpg). No Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, yet, but the ending is clearly setting things up for two films.
I found the casting interesting. Benedict Cumberbatch of course gained fame by playing Sherlock homes and I have to wonder if the address of the New York sanctum - 177A Bleecker Street - is a sly reference to 221b Baker St? When his character makes a major mistake and admits to it, I felt like shouting "No Shit Sherlock?!" Tilda Swinton plays the Ancient One, which might seem a major departure from the comics, but she played a near immortal Orlando in the film of the same name, so I think it's good casting. Wong is actually played by an actor whose surname is Wong! I know Chiwetel Ejiofor mainly from the film Serenity where he plays the Operative of the central alliance, who is also an assassin, and who totally (at least until the end of the film) believed in the morality of his cause. His character in this film, Mordo was one of Strange's main antagonists in the early comics, and I can see lots of the Operative reflected in this version of Mordo.
A good film for me, and far better than Civil War.

In another time, Andromeda might have been the story of the U.S.S.
In another time, Andromeda might have been the story of the U.S.S. Andromeda, last vestige of the United Federation of Planets recovered from the edge of a black hole, 200 years after it fell to the Klingons and Romulans. But so it goes. I rather like this series, which has a cheeky attitude.
