I have no idea (yet) how to make mesh avatars, but if you do, here's a resource for you.

Ada Radius has created and released a set of eight Starlight skin variants for the Ruth 2.0 project by Shin Ingen. They are MIT licensed, and can be downloaded at https://goo.gl/XBwznc. You can get them and the entire Ruth 2.0 setup at https://github.com/Outworldz/Ruth
Ruth 2.0 is a work in progress, but is already usable in many ways. She is an open source, free-to-use mesh avatar. There are many things we hope to achieve: making her work like the "other grid" fancy avatars, with lower polys and better looks, with 100% legal and permissive licensing, along with various skins, scripts and a HUD. You can build and sell accessories for her, too, so everyone wins!
We invite mesh clothing makers, modelers, Blender users, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator users to join us. Anyone who has used a mesh avatar with clothing and HUDs like this one will have we hope will also collaborate in her design, just as Ada has done with this first set of skins. We can also use people who can help put her together in a other usable forms, such as an IAR and an OAR.
We have started a wiki, and documentation will be needed, too.
